Following my brain is a habit....it is what I always do. Following my heart might makes me feel happy for now but I am afraid that I regret it in future.
You said it yourself, it is "fear" that holds you back. You may want to develop more trust in yourself by starting with small steps. So in small areas in life listen to your heart and enjoy the moment. If it is good for you, then it will spread to other parts of your life without you even noticing it :)

Which one is harder for you to do? and which one comes to you as a habit?
It is a difficult situation, but I would do what makes me feel better, even if it goes against some old habits ...

just be nice to yourself and try to enjoy the moment. Who knows what tommorow will bring and whether there will be tomorrow
